Alligatored Shrinking and cracking of a roof surface in an irregular pattern; like an alligator hide.
Asbestos Asbestos rock mined from the earth. Fibers are used to reinforce coatings and other materials.
Asphalt A hydrocarbon found in  natural deposits or distilled from petroleum. One of the world's finest waterproofers.
Base Sheet Bottom layer of ply on a built-up roof.
Bitumen Either asphalt or coal tar used in roofing.
Bleeding Discoloration of top coating from underneath.
Blister A raised area on a built-up roof where plys have delaminated. Often caused when moisture turns to vapor from the heat of the sun.
Built-Up Roof A roof system made of plys of roofing paper embedded in hot applied bitumens or cold process coatings.
Cap Sheet Complete re-covering of existing roof with new roof membrane.
Cold Process Roof coatings and cements used without heating.
Composition Roof Same as built-up paper roof. Commonly called mineral roll roofing when it has same mineral surface as composition shingles.
Coping Protective covering on top of parapet or firewall commonly constructed of metal or tile.
Core Sample A small section cut out of roof, examined for condition of roof, then replaced and waterproofed on the spot.
Corrugated or Ribbed Roof Rigid roofing panels  with series of arcs, valleys and ridges for increased strength.
Coverage Rate of application. Usually refers to gallons applied per 100 square feet (per roofing square)
Dead Level Flat roof without slope.
Deck Structural surface underneath roofing material.
Delamination Separation of roofing plys.
Eave The lower edge of roof extending out overhanging walls of building.
Felt Roofing paper used on built-up roofs.
Firewall Verticle walls extending through roofs separating sections of buildings.
Fishmouth A wrinkle along the edge of roofing paper where it overlaps another layer in a built-up roof.
Flashing Waterproofing at the point where verticle areas meet roof areas or where the valleys of two roofs meet.
